Hair Transplants Can Fill in a Scruffy Beard or Enhance Thinning Eyebrows

Facial hair transplants saw a significant increase around the world during the past year.  This growing popularity may be due to a recent societal trend.  This year at the Oscars, we saw men like Brad Pitt, Bradley Cooper, Leonardo Dicaprio, Jared Leto, all celebrities known for their clean-cut appearance, sporting full beards.  Not to mention US Press Secretary Jay Carney and a whole host of other celebrities taking part in “Movember“, the November campaign to raise awareness of male cancers.

Man-with-beardA recent study found that as many as 45 percent of men have been unhappy with the patchiness of their beard and sideburns. For many cultures, facial hair is a sign of prestige and masculinity.  Men are now seeking versatility in their facial hair.  The ability to grow a full and dense beard to designer stubble or a statement mustache allows them to change their look and presence whenever they like.

Eyebrows, too, continue to play an important role is how people project themselves. Loss of eyebrow hair can make an individual feel very self-conscious about his or her appearance and hair transplants can successfully correct the loss or thinning of eyebrows with natural growing hair and appearance. Eyebrow loss is most commonly associated with physical trauma, systemic or local disease, excessive plucking, typically to reshape the eyebrow, and medical or surgical treatments such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or surgical removal of a tumor.  The surgery can correct complete or partial loss and cover scars of one or both eyebrows.  The surgery can be performed on men or women.

At Salmon Creek Plastic Surgery,  we are pleased to offer the NeoGraft Hair Restoration technique which uses the NeoGraft Automated FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) Transplant device, which safely and effectively removes individual hair follicles from the scalp in their naturally occurring groupings of about 1-4 hairs and places them in the areas of the face, i.e., beard or eyebrows, and scalp where they are needed.  Unlike the strip method of harvesting the hair from the scalp, the Neograft FUE technique of harvesting the hair involves no scar at the donor site, quicker recovery time, less pain, and flexibility for any hair style of your choice (short or long).

If you are interested in learning more about how NeoGraft can help you, please contact us or call us at (360) 823-0860.

Plastic FAQ: What is Neograft®?

Plastic FAQsNeoGraft@ is a type of machine we use here in the office to help us with hair restoration. It helps harvest follicles of hair from the back of your head, allowing us to place them in areas of your head where you want more hair. It’s minimally invasive and means that we no longer have to cut strips of hair from the back of your head and can eliminate stitches and the scarring that comes with the “strip” procedure. It’s also faster to remove donor hair using Neograft. The end results of NeoGraft are very similar to the “strip” procedure and rely on the skills of the surgeon to artfully place the hair follicles on your head for a natural appearance. It’s a faster procedure with less scarring and faster recovery times. If you’d like to learn more about how we perform Neograft and whether it’s a good solution for your hair loss, please check out our hair restoration and Neograft page for details and a video.

Combating Hair Loss with NeoGraft

When I was in my plastic surgery residency, I never had any significant exposure to hair transplantation procedures.  Part of the reason for this was that we were busy taking care of complex trauma cases, burns, or other major reconstructive problems.  Once I started in practice however, we began to receive inquiries frequently as to whether we performed hair transplantation.

In all honesty, that was not initially a procedure we wanted to offer due to the rather noticeable posterior scalp scar and the tedious, drawn out nature of the procedure.  At the plastic surgery annual meeting in 2008, I saw for the first time a new and much improved way of efficiently harvesting single hair follicles to achieve a natural looking hair restoration without a posterior scalp scar.  This was the NeoGraft machine, which has dramatically changed the way we now approach hair transplantation.

The NeoGraft technique has been a standard part of our practice at Salmon Creek Plastic Surgery for over two and a half years.  Although one might think that this would be a procedure offered exclusively to men, it has turned out that nearly half of our NeoGraft patients are female!  Hair loss is exceedingly common in women, and our patients appreciate the fact that they can undergo a hair restoration procedure with minimal downtime and minimal discomfort. The donor site (from where the hair follicles to be transplanted are taken) is very easy to camouflage in women, and most of our patients can get back to normal activity in under a week.

We would be happy to talk further with you about this very satisfying procedure.  Feel free to give us a call at 360.823.0860 if you would like to come in for more information!
