SCPS Participates in Internship Program with De La Salle North Catholic High School

Update: SCPS would like to congratulate T’aira Turner, our student intern from De La Salle North Catholic High School, on her acceptance into the nursing program at Seattle Pacific University!  We are proud to have T’aira as part of our team this year and have no doubt that she will be a wonderful addition to the Seattle Pacific student body!

We are delighted to participate this year for the first time in the Corporate Internship Program with De La Salle North Catholic High School in Portland.

DLA-NorthThe school provides a quality education for approximately 330 motivated, college-bound students from north/northeast Portland and Clark County, many of whom are underserved and would not have an opportunity to receive a similar education elsewhere.

  • Most of the students live in poverty.
  • Students offset the cost of their education by working one day each week in a Corporate Internship at over 80 businesses like Nike, and OnPoint Community Credit Union, and now, Salmon Creek Plastic Surgery.
  • The majority of the students are African American, Latino or Asian.

The school year is extended to ensure that the work does not compromise their education.  Students who graduate from De La Salle are not only prepared to succeed in college, they have pertinent work experience which will help them when they enter the workplace.  While the majority of the students who attend De La Salle North Catholic High School enter two, and sometimes three, academic years behind, 100% of last year’s seniors were accepted to college.

Currently, De La Salle North has eight students from Clark County.  All receive financial aid to attend.

Three Generations of Greens Attend BCS National Championship

Rick Green and FamilyGo-IrishOn January 7th, three generations of the Green family traveled to Miami, Florida to cheer on their beloved Fighting Irish of Notre Dame as they took on the mighty Crimson Tide of Alabama for the National Championship of college football. Rick, ND class of ’85, joined his father Dick, ND class of ’62, and his daughter Carolyn, ND class of ’14 for a once-in-a-lifetime experience together at Sun Life Stadium in Miami. Despite their team’s being thoroughly demolished, demoralized and defeated at the hands of the Crimson Tide, the Greens enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow Fighting Irish fans and the gracious hospitality of those from Alabama. Given the fact that Notre Dame last found itself in this position 24 years ago, there may well be a fourth generation Domer in the Green family the next time the Fighting Irish play for the National Championship!
